Am I still a Photographer when most of my knowledge in the field comes from studying at a photo academy where how to work a darkroom was a major requirement?
Does it make me more skilled or qualified then the hobbyist or tourist with a new digital camera?
I hope I am!
When you shoot film, you aim/hope for every 4 to 6 times you release the shutter, there is a usable photo and for every film maybe a great one.
In my world a photographer plays with light,. He has knowledge of composition and he knows how the smallest change will affect the outcome. He looks at life as images stitched together. He loves his camera as his most valuable possession . And most importantly he is humble, confident and creative.
Whilst a camera owner is just a tourist with a good camera and his finger glued in the shutter hoping to "catch" that luck shot.
Like with good art or design, the ultimate goal is to convey a message and to get a response. Writers don't just write for the sake of having a pen and photographers don't take photo's for the sake of having a camera.
They create to communicate !
